Healthcare for New Residents of the 1000 Islands: Hospitals and Family Doctors
Last updated: October 19, 2026
The region has two main hospitals on the Ontario side: Kingston Health Sciences Centre in Kingston and Brockville General Hospital in Brockville. For a family doctor, register with Health Care Connect, the province's free service, by calling 811 or registering online. It does not guarantee a match, so register as soon as you have an Ontario health card. Walk-in clinics are the usual stand-in while you wait.
Where are the main hospitals in the 1000 Islands?
- Brockville General Hospital, 75 Charles Street, Brockville. Its own site says the emergency department runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The entrance is off Ormond Street. The hospital's general number is 613-345-5649.
- Kingston General Hospital, part of Kingston Health Sciences Centre. KHSC says its Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, with the entrance off King Street West. The Hotel Dieu Hospital site at 166 Brock Street has had an urgent care centre for problems that cannot wait for a family doctor but are not emergencies. KHSC's page that we could read was dated 2018, so check KHSC for current urgent care hours before you go.
For a serious injury or condition, call 911. Gananoque and the smaller communities along the river have clinics and pharmacies, but for hospital care most residents go to Kingston or Brockville. Our Living in Gananoque, Living in Brockville and Living in Kingston guides cover each town.
How do you find a family doctor in Ontario?
Use Health Care Connect. The Province of Ontario says it finds a family doctor, nurse practitioner or primary care team that is accepting new patients. You can register online or by calling 811 (TTY 711), which is available around the clock. You need your contact information and a valid Ontario health card number, and the mailing address must match the one on your card. The Province says joining does not guarantee a clinician will be found right away. See the official page, Find a family doctor or nurse practitioner (updated August 9, 2026).
If you have just moved, you will need to get an Ontario health card first. Start that before the move date if you can.
Where do you go while you wait for a family doctor?
KHSC advises people with non-urgent illnesses or injuries to consider a local walk-in clinic first, and points to the Southeast Health Line to find one. Brockville General Hospital's site also points to a free nurse advice line for deciding where to go. Check each clinic's hours and whether it takes walk-ins before you travel.
Which health businesses does Thrive list?
We do not list family doctors' offices or walk-in clinics. Our health and wellness listings are businesses such as chiropractors, dental offices and massage therapists, mostly in Kingston and Brockville. Browse them on the health and wellness page.
