How to Hire a Mover for a Move to the 1000 Islands
Last updated: October 19, 2026
In Ontario, moving companies are not licensed by the province, so the checking is on you. The Province recommends getting at least three written estimates, checking the Consumer Beware List, and signing a written contract. By law a mover generally cannot charge more than 10 percent above the estimate in your contract. We do not rank movers or quote prices, because costs depend on distance, volume and season. Use the steps below to compare quotes yourself.
What does Ontario law say about hiring a mover?
The Province of Ontario says moving companies are not licensed, so research matters. Its guidance, Hiring a mover (updated June 19, 2026), says to:
- Get at least three written estimates from different companies.
- Search the Consumer Beware List for complaints and charges, and look for alerts or complaints with the Better Business Bureau.
- Put the contract in writing. Under the Consumer Protection Act, contracts worth more than $50 must be written.
What must a moving contract include?
The Province says every contract must include the mover's name, address and contact information, an itemized price list, the total amount you will pay, the start and end dates, and the payment terms. You can also ask to include the estimate, the mover's insurer and policy number, who is responsible for damage or loss, staffing and vehicle details, and any border documents.
Can a mover charge more than the estimate?
Not by much. The Province says a mover cannot charge more than 10 percent above the estimate in the contract unless you need extra supplies or services and agree to the increase. A mover also cannot hold your belongings to pressure you into paying more than the agreed amount. If you feel you must pay, the Province says to write "paid under protest" on the invoice and keep a copy.
How do you compare moving quotes for a move to the 1000 Islands?
- Give every company the same inventory, the same dates and the same pickup and delivery details, including stairs and long carries, so the quotes can be compared line by line.
- Ask whether the quote is a fixed price or an estimate, and what the 10 percent limit would mean in dollars on your contract.
- Ask about the shoreline and island properties: if your new place is reached by water or a private lane, say so up front.
- Ask what happens if your dates change, and get the answer in writing.
- Ask each company about insurance, and get the policy details in writing.
