Furnace Repair in Kingston, Brockville and Gananoque: What to Do First
Last updated: October 20, 2026
If your furnace stops working, first confirm the thermostat is set to heat and the unit has power, then call a heating company. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds at any point, get everyone outside and call 911 from outside, and do not go back in to troubleshoot. Local companies that list furnace repair or heating service are below for Kingston, Brockville, Gananoque and Prescott. We do not publish repair prices because we could not source reliable local ones, so get a written quote before work starts.

What should you check before you call about a furnace that stopped?
Only the basics: the thermostat is set to heat and above the room temperature, and the furnace has power. Do not open the unit or try to repair a gas or oil appliance yourself. If you find nothing, or the furnace restarts and stops again, call a heating company and tell them what you saw.
What are the carbon monoxide rules for a home with a furnace?
Since January 1, 2026, Ontario requires carbon monoxide alarms on every storey of a home that has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage, including storeys with no bedrooms, and next to each sleeping area. This is from the Province's carbon monoxide safety page (updated December 30, 2025). The Province says it is against the law to remove the batteries or tamper with the alarms. If an alarm sounds, the Province says to get everyone out of the home immediately and call 911 or your local emergency number.
How often should a furnace be serviced?
Two official sources give slightly different answers, so ask your heating company which applies to your unit. Natural Resources Canada says oil-fired furnaces and boilers need annual cleaning and tuning, and that natural gas and propane furnaces and boilers should be serviced at least every two years (ENERGY STAR maintenance page). The Province of Ontario recommends that fuel-burning appliances, chimneys and vents be cleaned and inspected by professionals every year before cold weather sets in.
Should you repair or replace a furnace?
That depends on the furnace's age, the fault and the quote. Our furnace repair or replace guide walks through the decision, and the heat pump vs furnace guide covers replacing with a different system. Before you hire, check the contractor's licence.
