How do seasonal snow contracts work?

Residential plowing is usually sold one of two ways:

  • Seasonal contract. You pay a set price for the whole winter, often in one or two installments, and the operator clears your driveway every time snowfall reaches an agreed depth. The price stays the same whether it is a mild winter or a heavy one.
  • Per-push (per-visit). You pay each time the plow comes. It can cost less in a light winter and more in a heavy one. Some operators offer per-push only to existing customers, or after their seasonal routes are full.

Commercial lots usually work on a custom contract that covers plowing, salting or sanding, and sometimes hauling snow off site when there is nowhere left to pile it.

When should you book snow removal?

Book in October or early November. Operators plan their routes before the first snowfall, and some cap the number of driveways they take so they can reach everyone before the morning commute. Once routes are full, some companies keep a waiting list and others stop taking new customers. If you have just moved, booking early also gives the operator time to see the property and put in driveway markers before the ground freezes.

What should you ask a plow operator before you sign?

  1. Are you insured, and can I see proof? Ask for a certificate of liability insurance, especially for commercial properties. A plow can damage lawns, garage doors, cars and curbs.
  2. Seasonal or per-push, and what is included? Does the price cover the driveway only, or also walkways, steps and the windrow left at the end of the drive? Is salting or sanding extra?
  3. What is the trigger depth? Most operators come out once snowfall reaches a set depth. Ask what it is, whether they return during a long storm and whether they come back to clear the windrow left by the City plow.
  4. When will I be cleared? Ask roughly where you sit on the route and whether they aim to be done before a certain time.
  5. What is your damage policy? Ask how they handle damage to lawns, interlock or garden beds, who marks the edges, and how you report a problem in spring.
  6. What happens in a big storm or if equipment breaks down? Ask whether they have backup equipment or staff.
  7. How do you take payment, and is there a written contract? Get the agreement, including the dates the season starts and ends, in writing.

Frequently asked questions about snow removal companies in Brockville

When should I book snow removal in Brockville?

October to early November. Many local operators fill their routes before the first snowfall and stop taking new driveways after that.

Is a seasonal contract or per-push cheaper?

It depends on the winter. A seasonal contract costs the same however much it snows, so it suits people who want a fixed budget. Per-push can work out cheaper in a light winter and more expensive in a heavy one. Ask each operator for both options if they offer them.

Does my plow operator clear the windrow left by the City plow?

Not always. Some include a clean-up pass after the City plow goes by, and some do not. Ask before you sign.

Who clears the sidewalk in front of my house in Brockville?

The City of Brockville clears sidewalks on its network under its Winter Maintenance Policy, which follows the province's minimum standards and sets priorities, so clearing is not immediate. What the City does and does not clear, and its current priorities, are on brockville.com or from Public Works. Check there before you assume a sidewalk or the end of your driveway is covered.

What should I do if a plow damages my lawn or driveway?

Note it and photograph it when you see it, and report it to the operator in writing. Check your contract's damage policy before the season starts so you know how claims are handled.
